Boston Red Sox - Fantasy Baseball Preview
New editions Brad Penny, John Smoltz, Rocco Baldelli and Takashi Saito could give the Red Sox the extra boost they will need to overtake the defending champion Tampa Bay Rays and the restocked New York Yankees for the AL East title in 2009. However until those four key additions can prove they are fully recovered from injuries and health problems, the Red Sox and fantasy baseball teams should rely primarily on Dustin Pedroia, Jonathan Papelbon, Jason Bay, David Ortiz, Kevin Youkilis, Josh Beckett, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Jon Lester and Jacoby Ellsbury to begin the 2009 season.
Top 10 Boston Red Sox - 2009 Fantasy Baseball Rankings
#1 - Dustin Pedroia - 2B

After a career year last season, Pedroia enters 2009 as a top 5 overall fantasy baseball second basemen and a top 30 overall fantasy baseball pick for the 2009 season. A 20 homerun and 20 stolen base season could be in store for Pedroia in 2009.
2009 Projections: 110 runs scored, 15-20 homeruns, 20 stolen bases, 80 rbi, .320 batting average
#2 - Jason Bay - OF
As a major key to the Red Sox having a successful run producing offense in 2009, Bay could easily have a career year this season. He will enter the 2009 season as a possible top 10 overall outfielder, and should definitely not be ranked any lower than a top 15 overall outfielder. A top 35 overall fantasy baseball ranking is accurate for Bay entering the 2009 season.
2009 Projections: 35 homeruns, 110 rbi, 110 runs scored, 10 stolen bases, .295 batting average
#3 - Jonathan Papelbon - RP
Entering the 2009 season, Papelbon will be nearly the unanimous #1 overall relief pitcher taken in 2009 fantasy baseball drafts. On a very good Boston team that could easily post 90 wins during the 2009 season, Papelbon should come close to 40 saves this year. Papelbon is worthy of being a top 50 overall fantasy baseball pick entering the 2009 season.
2009 Projections: 3 wins, 35-40 saves, 80 strikeouts, 1.90 ERA, 0.90 WHIP
